Knowledge is Power!
Wines of Chile invites professionals and amateurs alike to experience the evolution of Chilean wines during the third annual Salud! Chilean Wine Fest. This citywide celebration begins on September 18, Chile’s Independence Day, and runs until the end of September. Thirty of New York’s most acclaimed restaurants and ten of the city’s best wine shops have joined with Wines of Chile to offer consumers the opportunity to sample Chilean wines by the glass and participate in free in-store tastings. Salud! will give consumers the opportunity to better familiarize themselves with Chile’s premium quality wines and diverse terroirs.
Participating restaurants will be showcasing a sampling of Chile’s most celebrated varietals including Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Carmenere, as well as a host of top-notch red blends. In addition, retailers will be offering Chilean wine tastings throughout the 2 weeks of the celebration, featuring some of Chile’s emerging varieties such as Pinot Noir and Syrah.
“The Salud program has enabled some of New York’s best restaurants to introduce their customers to the exciting wines that are now emerging from Chile,” explains Juan Somavia, Managing Director of Wines of Chile. “In hosting Chilean wine tastings, retailers around the city have come to recognize the growing demand for wine education and we are thrilled to be able to satisfy this need.”Participating New York Restaurants Include:

Scarsdale, NY 10583In recent years, Chile’s winemakers have pushed the frontiers to seek new regions to plant cool climate varieties. They have experienced great success with Pinot Noir and Syrah, which have been growing in popularity in the U.S. According to the most recent Gomberg-Fredrikson Report, which included statistics through June 2008, Pinot Noir from Chile has increased in the U.S. by 21,300 nine-liter cases (+44%) over 2007 and Chilean Syrah has increased by 14,800 nine-liter cases (+56%). Sauvignon Blanc and Carmenere, Chile’s unique grape, have also shown marked gains, increasing by 25,900 nine-liter cases (14%) and 5,300 nine-liter cases (7%) respectively. Overall, Chilean wine has rapidly increased its presence in the U.S. market, climbing 13% by volume in 2007.
