One startling change has been the TV-watching habits of Hispanic viewers. In 1995, most Hispanic viewers in New York primarily watched English-language television (62 percent) over Spanish-language stations (38 percent), according to Nielsen Media Research. Last year, viewers favored the Spanish stations 71 to 29 percent. Similar trends are happening elsewhere.

For more than four years, Verizon has been installing its fiber optic, or Fios, network throughout the region and in a dozen other states. The company is attempting to gain a competitive edge against Cox Communications and other cable, Internet and phone-service providers. A Virginian-Pilot investigation over the past six months has found that many workers on the Verizon project are in the country illegally, performing back-breaking work that most Americans simply won’t do.

In an effort to gain a stronger presence in the Hispanic food market, a group led by Grocers Supply Co. Inc. has inked a deal to acquire 37 grocery stores from Minyard Food Stores Inc.

In 2008, eMarketer estimates there are 23 million Hispanics online, about 52% of the US Hispanic population, but widening cultural and language fragmentation makes reaching them a challenge. And as the population grows, so will the problem.
