Churros hit mainstream – Spurred by an explosion of interest in all things Latino, the fried batons of dough — traditionally sprinkled with cinnamon and sugar — are popping up on menus across the country. When the president’s daughter serves churros at her wedding, it’s probably safe to say they’ve hit the mainstream.

Still, there are issues in which a Latino lens slides into place. Education is one. It doesn’t surprise me that Latinos consistently rank education as the No. 1 issue. It must be, when 30 percent to 50 percent of Hispanic students are dropping out of high school and Latinos are the largest and fastest growing population in the country. A plus B equals disaster.

When she won the Ms. Latina USA title in 2006, Sandra Colon became the first Connecticut resident since Dorothy Hann in 1933 to win a national beauty title. Despite the 73-year gap between national pageant winners, Colon won her title in relative obscurity.

“McCain’s problem is the problem of his party demonizing Hispanic people,” Luis Cortes (one of Time Magazine’s 25 most influential evangelicals in America & 2x Bush backer) said. “His party demonized us. You can’t switch off the immigration rhetoric and think it will work. In the context of the immigration issue, Hispanics define the enemy as the Republican Party and you don’t erase that overnight.

About 1,000 people, including rabbis, Hispanic immigrants and Catholic clergy, marched through Postville, Iowa on Sunday, protesting working conditions at Agriprocessors Inc.

The real story is decades of inadequate response from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the U.S. health system to HIV-AIDS in the Hispanic community; that has allowed almost 100,000 Hispanics to die and new cases to continue to appear.

GOP strategist Bill McInturff has long emphasized that earning 40 percent of the Hispanic vote is critical for Republicans to win. Today, McInturff is John McCain’s pollster, and by his metric McCain has a serious Latino problem.

Regardless of whom Hispanics wind up supporting come November, Harley Shaiken, chairman of the Center for Latin American Studies at the University of California Berkeley, says there’s clearly a cautionary tale in all this. “Tension is nothing new between races and ethnicities in this country,” he says. “But it can be overstated … racial and ethnic relations are very complex to interpret. Plausible and correct are two different things.”
