Antonio Allbritten’s New CD Mixes Eclectic Styles, Latin Flavor for a Wholly Unique Sound

Tags:

“Singer/songwriter Antonio Allbritten says the inspiration for his complex arrangements often comes in those moments between sleep and waking. His dreams must be beautiful ones, because Allbritten’s new album, “El Oscuro Paso (The Dark Passage)” (Fantasy Phase Four Music Production Company, LLC, www.myspace.com/antonioallbritten), evokes images of tropical beaches and lush rainforests, even as it features disco backbeats and woodwinds wrapped around electronic melodies.

Available for purchase at iTunes and Amazon, “El Oscuro Paso” showcases Allbritten’s indie sensibility. From “Antigua Samba Arbol (The Old Shade Tree),” which really does sound like the music one would hope to hear while sitting under a shady tree, to “La Demente Sombrerero (The Mad Hatter),” a laid-back instrumental reggaeton (fusion of reggae and Latin American music) song, the album delivers the intricately layered compositions for which Allbritten has become known. And though they are thoroughly modern, all ten songs of “El Oscuro Paso” sound like the music one might hear during a stroll through any long-established Central American neighborhood.

In his review of “El Oscuro Paso,” HOY magazine’s Tommy Calle wrote that Allbritten “… manages to captivate the audience from start to finish … The material combines very slow and fast [rhythms and] seems devoted to a love of the past, nostalgia and nature.” [Translated from the original Spanish.]

Early iTunes reviews of “El Oscuro Paso” were equally positive. “The beats are to die for,” wrote one reviewer. “[The album] reminded me of my trip to the Bahamas with the tropical beats put in here. I am a huge fan!”

“Listening to Antonio [Allbritten] is definitely a trip to exotic locales where there are only you and your music,” wrote another. “I recommend listening in a moment of total relaxation.” [Translated from the original Spanish.]

Those interested in previewing or purchasing the music of “El Oscuro Paso” can do so at iTunes or Amazon. To learn more about Allbritten and his newest album, visit the artist at www.myspace.com/antonioallbritten. “

“Edgar Mercedes has made a fortune taking bets. So when the bookie saw 13-year-old Michel Inoa throw 78 mph off a mound in 2005 he knew that the lanky, 6-foot-3 right-hander was worth the wager. He’s workable. He’s workable, Mercedes kept saying to himself as he thought of the adjustments he would make to Inoa’s delivery: the flick of his wrist, the angle of his waist. Latino Businessman Takes Aim At California’s Water

“California most important step this year will be the development of public policy where California can actually implement water conservation, protection and allocation policies that will benefit all its residents.

After experiencing two consecutive years of below-average rainfall, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger proclaimed a statewide drought on June 4, 2008, requiring the Department of Water Resources to take necessary actions to help communities to conserve and ration water. The California Latino Water Coalition, an organization established in 2007 to include the participation of the state’s Latino community in the conservation and protection of the precious water supply is actively involved in developing such a public policy.

Led by comedian Paul Rodriguez and businessman Ruben Guerra, who serve as co-chairs and have linked their resources to get the Latino communities involved, the Latino Water Coalition is taking shape, and taking charge.

“We were hoping to get a bond qualified for this fall’s election to help us take steps toward conserving and protecting our water,” says Guerra, who is also the Chairman of the powerful Latin Business Association of Los Angeles.

Guerra was referring to a bond measure that would have funneled over $6 billion to initiate water conservation and protection projects. The bond measured failed initially to qualify for the November 2008 election, but Governor Schwarzenegger is making efforts to move the measure into the fall ballot.

“When this issue was brought to me, I saw my children, our future, on how important it is for us to conserve and protect our water,” Guerra adds. “If there’s no infrastructure set up and we experience a devastating earthquake, it’s possible there would be no water available for months. And, we’re talking about the near future. What about when our children are older and there are more people in this state, will we leave water available for them and their needs?”

Guerra and the Latin Business Association Board have taken this issue as a call to inform and create new habits about water conservation and protection among the Latino community.

“It is common for us Latinos to know we can get home from work and take a shower because we don’t think twice about conservation,” says Guerra. “The people need to know and think about what if we had no water?”

Held in conjunction with the 22nd Annual NAMIC Conference, the two-day workshop will take place September 15-16, 2008 from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the New York Marriott Marquis Hotel in Manhattan.
(Logo: www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/20060705/NYW092LOGO )

A total of 15 writers of color will be selected to take part in the intensive educational forum, which will mark the return of workshop facilitator, Carole Kirschner. A veteran television executive and the architect of the CBS Diversity Institute Writers Mentoring Program, Kirschner led the previous installment of the workshop, which was held Spring of 2008 in Los Angeles. Designed to give participants the opportunity to hone their craft and learn the essentials of creating, packaging and selling a script, the NAMIC Fall 2008 Writers’ Workshop application deadline is August 8, 2008.

“As an educational program, the NAMIC Writers’ Workshop series has emerged as a leading forum for talent of color to advance their skills and knowledge of the business,” said Kathy Johnson, president, NAMIC. “It is fitting that we present the third installment of the workshop in conjunction with this year’s Annual Conference, which focuses on innovation, which is fueled by diversity and inclusion.”

NAMIC’s Writers’ Workshop series was established in support of the trade association’s efforts to provide programs that foster increased multi-ethnic diversity and inclusion within the content development areas of the television, film and multi-media arenas. A judging panel of communications industry executives selected by NAMIC will choose a maximum of 15 participants who will each receive complimentary admission into the program.

The NAMIC Fall 2008 Writers’ Workshop is made possible through the support of the Walter Kaitz Foundation. A detailed workshop description, application forms and eligibility requirements are available via the NAMIC website at www.namic.com or for more information, call the NAMIC headquarters at (212) 594-5985.

Meredith Hispanic Ventures Will Relaunch Espera and 12 Meses Under the Ser Padres Umbrella

Filed under [ Business ] [ Media ] [ Press Releases ] [ Blogante Business ] [ Blogante Business Essentials ]
Tags: , ,

“Meredith Corporation (NYSE: MDP) announced today that Espera, the magazine for expectant mothers, and 12 Meses, focused on the first 12 months of life, will be re-launched under the Ser Padres umbrella. The Meredith Hispanic Ventures titles will be renamed Ser Padres Espera and Ser Padres Bebe, respectively, starting in April 2009. Alberto Oliva, editor-in-chief of Ser Padres and author of the books Magazines that Make History (University Press of Florida, 2004) and In Vogue: The Illustrated History of the World’s Most Influential Fashion Magazine (Rizzoli, 2006), and his team will oversee the editorial direction of each magazine, a responsibility previously held by sister publication Siempre Mujer’s team.

“This is a natural and critical evolution for Meredith Hispanic Ventures,” commented Ruth Gaviria, executive director of Meredith Hispanic Ventures. “Meredith acquired Espera and 12 Meses with American Baby from Prime Media in 2002. Since then, we have acquired and re-launched Ser Padres and launched Siempre Mujer, the leading lifestyle and service magazine for women. Now, Espera and 12 Meses will capitalize on the 18-year brand equity of Ser Padres. Our content portfolio now reaches one in three Hispanic moms in the United States.”

Ser Padres Espera will be published three times a year (spring, summer and fall/winter issues) — up from twice a year — and will also increase its annual circulation by 35% to 1.05 million expectant mothers. The title will continue to be distributed through OB-GYN offices as a standalone magazine. Ser Padres Bebe will continue to be distributed in maternity wards through sampler bags, with a yearly circulation of 600,000, and will be perfect bound. Both titles will reflect the needs and aesthetic of the young Hispanic expectant or first-time mother.

Meredith Hispanic Ventures will also launch Mimosblog.com, a blog by the editors of Ser Padres that addresses the pre and post natal concerns of Hispanic mothers up to their child’s pre-teen years. The blog, launching August 4, will seek to create a community of women with interactive features like “My Favorite Photo” and “The Things They Say!,” popular features in Ser Padres magazine. Mimosblog.com will navigate bilingually in Spanish, English and Spanglish, reflecting the language preferences of this young Hispanic mom.

“There has been 82% growth in unique Spanish-preferred Hispanic visitors to blogs and many of those turn to blogs for informational purposes or to stay in touch with friends and family and meet new peers,” explained Oliva. “Mimosblog.com will be the online hub for Hispanic moms, where they can share their concerns, tips and advice and receive immediate feedback from women just like them. We know that one in three babies will be born to a Hispanic woman in the U.S. in the next decade and it remains our mission to educate, inspire and support them through many media platforms.” “*

This powerful special with astonishing reenactments and a sweeping storyline is sure to captivate audiences. Finally viewers will be treated to a riveting and sometimes surprising dramatization behind the creation of one of the eight wonders of the world in, Behind the Great Wall. These combined pre-Olympic specials, in true Discovery style, artfully capture China’s past present and future using ground-breaking photographic techniques and stunning videography.

“We at Discovery en Espanol aim to offer viewers programming that’s not only enlightening and educational but also relevant and timely. As the eyes of the world turn to Beijing, the historical perspective that these three programs impart will serve as a complement enriching viewers’ experience of the Olympic Games,” said Luis Silberwasser, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Discovery Networks U.S. Hispanic Group

Pre-Olympic China Spectacular — Sunday, August 3rd, 2008:

The pre-Olympic programming spectacular begins at 7 pm ET/PT on Discovery en Espanol and runs through 12 pm ET/PT with a re-airing of Discovery Atlas: China Revealed at 11 pm ET/PT.

Discovery Atlas: China Revealed — 7:00 pm ET/PT: Coupling insightful storytelling with spectacular photographic techniques, “Discovery Atlas: China Revealed” brings alive the fascinating and complex contemporary life of one of the greatest nations on earth. The narrative of the film is structured around ‘frozen moments,’ introducing us to characters and places. In modern day China old walls are being torn down and futuristic landscapes of glass and steel are shooting up in their place. Employing hi-definition cameras and the effect techniques used in the most recent Chinese feature film spectaculars such as House of Flying Daggers, Discovery Atlas: China Revealed is a visual masterpiece.

Genghis Khan - 8:00 pm ET/PT: Follow the rise to glory of Genghis Kahn, the 13th century Mongol whose empire covered four times the area conquered by Alexander the Great. Combining the savagery of a real-life Conan the Barbarian with the sheer tactical genius of Napoleon, Genghis brought his armies from the outermost reaches of eastern Asia to the edge of Europe, uniting the disparate Mongol tribes along the way and establishing an empire that would last until the 17th century. From his humble beginning as an orphaned child to his deathbed plea to his sons, this riveting docudrama explores and demystifies the myths behind the legend.

Behind the Great Wall - 9:00 pm ET/PT: If ever a single object defined a nation, it is the Great Wall of China. This is its definitive story. The two hour film traces the story of the greatest engineering feat of the age, inspired by the genius of one of China’s most powerful military leaders Qi Jiguang. From the terror of the apocalyptic Mongol raids in 1550 — the Ming dynasty’s own 9/11, it follows Qi’s career through the founding of the nation’s first professional army to the building of the wall itself and its proof in battle. This ground-breaking documentary, bringing us a series of stunning televisual firsts, includes face to face moments with the descendants of the wall’s builders.
