They used to be songs of love and loss, of legends and tragedies. For generations, Mexican folk ballads known as “corridos” memorialized the hard-scrabble life of farmers, migrant laborers and the downtrodden.
But a newer form of ballad, telling tales of drugs and violence, has risen in popularity to eclipse the old songs. The “narcocorrido” has become hugely popular throughout Mexico, Latin America and among immigrant and Latino communities in the United States.”*
