““It’s a devastating problem for every victim,” said Mira Kramarovsky, a family-violence specialist for the Jewish Family Service Association of Cleveland. “But when you don’t know the language, and you’re afraid of everything — even your partner — it’s even worse.”

Kramarovsky spoke those words to a dozen women gathered in a conference room at the Cleveland YWCA. The group reflected a rainbow of cultures — Russian, Chinese, Arab, Latina and South Asian.

Her topic, “Domestic Violence in Immigrant Homes,” had wrested the attention of each in recent times, often after a spectacular incident. “*
