Latin alternative music —a deft umbrella term for a category-defying assortment of sounds — just might be the perpetual underdog. Its assets are eccentricity, modest commercial expectations, dedicated clusters of fans and the stubbornness of artists determined to make music their own way. Stacked up against it are all the odds facing any independent music that isn’t geared for standard radio formats — low budgets, limited exposure — along with, inevitably, the language barrier. “*
