“The allusions flew fast and furious at the Joyce Theater on Tuesday, as Ballet Biarritz performed two works by its director, Thierry Malandain. The company is the final feature of the French Collection festival, but — mon Dieu! — Mr. Malandain’s gaze is on Spain in both pieces.

“Le Portrait de l’Infante” takes Velázquez (particularly his masterpiece “Las Meninas”) as its primary source material, along with several Spanish-inspired compositions by Ravel. The Spanish artist Manolo Valdés has created three massive female sculptures riffing on Velázquez’s depiction of women in voluminous skirts.”*
