Dance Review – Israel Galván – One-Man Flamenco, Without Instruments From: nytimes.com

Tagged:

“Even before he stepped onstage Tuesday night, everything was working in Israel Galván’s favor. A breeze cast a quiet spell over the crowd gathered outdoors at the Hispanic Society of America on Audubon Terrace in Upper Manhattan. And as soon as Mr. Galván appeared on the unadorned black stage, he fit right in. As a flamenco dancer, he is full of purity, almost shockingly so.

Known as an avant-garde force in Spain, Mr. Galván is postmodern by typical flamenco standards. In his new work, “Solo,” presented as part of the Dia Art Foundation’s series Tuesdays on the Terrace, he strips flamenco of its histrionic showbiz status. The stage isn’t amplified with microphones; even his simple costume, black pants and an untucked shirt, defies the usual gaudiness. “*
