As they ventured into the park to see Los Tigres del Norte, the godfathers of norteno music, their simple declaration of “we’re here!” also set the theme for the evening.
For decades, the San Jose-based Los Tigres del Norte, who hail from the Mexican state of Sinaloa, have celebrated the immigrant experience in song, especially in uptempo, polka-inflected narratives known as corridos. These story songs, sung “directo al corazon” — to borrow the title of one of the band’s many hit discs — chronicle life on the other side of the border and the sacrifices involved in the journey.”*
