“For nearly half her life, Noemi Tlatenchi spoke no English. Next year, the 2008 Coughlin High School graduate will go to college with a full scholarship and a dream of helping disadvantaged kids learn and excel.

Along the way, she’s helped countless local Hispanic community members cope with the challenges of everyday life. And somehow, she still squeezed in time for two part-time jobs, teaching religious education and even some soccer.

Tlatenchi — her name is pronounced No-emmy Tell-a-ten-chee — said she loves a challenge. “I think you can have anything you want in life if you work hard enough,” she said. And she has worked hard.”*
