Knowledge is Power!
After a two-decade slumber, the quintessentially Latin beat that became a worldwide phenomenon in the ’70s seems to have regained its hip cache among young Latinos and Latinas.
Dance studios in Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens are all reporting an increase in the number of Hispanics in their late teens and 20s signing up to learn salsa.
“Every year, it is growing more and more,” said Carlos Vásquez, 54, of La Salsa de Hoy studio in Sunset Park, Brooklyn. “It’s nice to see them carrying on the Latino tradition. I inherited that good thing from my father, who used to dance at the Palladium.””*
