Are Cultures, as Represented by the US and Mexico, Equal?
Tagged: MexicoPosted on: June 9th, 2008
One of the complaints by critics of multiculturalism is that, contrary to what this philosophy posits, cultures are not truly equal. The critics in the United States use Mexico – its culture and institutions – as an example. The U.S. and Mexico, thus, have become symbols in the fight against multiculturalism. Even though Mexico is rapidly creating its own unique style of modernity, there are persistent, pointed, and sometimes slanderous commentaries in conservative websites and publications highlighting negative aspects of Mexican culture.
The argument that follows is that for those very reasons the United States must limit its relationship with Mexico in immigration and economic integration terms, or risk weakening American institutions through multiculturalism.”*
