State lawmakers agreed Thursday to one of the nation’s toughest illegal immigration reform packages, which Gov. Mark Sanford says he’ll sign into law.
After months of fighting, House members approved a Senate-amended bill Thursday. It requires all S.C. businesses, both public and private, to take new steps to verify newly hired employees are in the country legally. And businesses that fail to comply could be temporarily shut down.
“This is a historic day,” said Rep. Jim Harrison, R-Richland, who led the House charge to push the bill through. “Although we’re disappointed that Congress has yet to create a comprehensive approach to dealing with illegal immigration, (South Carolina) has done as much as it can do.””*
