Weekly Review –»

With Memorial Day this has been a short week but that doesn’t mean there wasn’t plenty of news. Seriously, where else could you find so much relevant and useful news for, from or about Hispanics and Latinos (just scroll down). PLUS, I just found out that HispanicTips has received press credentials for the Democratic National Convention in Denver (see what other blogs got credentials).

Following are my Top 10 for the week in no particular order (bolded in dated list):

  1. “A certain segment has basically been feeding a kind of xenophobia. There’s a reason why hate crimes against Hispanic people doubled last year,” Obama said. “If you have people like Lou Dobbs and Rush Limbaugh ginning things up, it’s not surprising that would happen.”
  2. Co-chair of Clinton’s Hispanic Leadership Council endorses Obama - U.S. Rep. Dennis Cardoza
  3. Paying the Price of the Immigration Crackdown - Are Americans willing to pay for the intensifying crackdown on immigrants?
  4. Latino Activists Face Death Threats in Georgia
  5. A Washington town confronts its language barrier - In a program seen as a bellwether, the Justice Department steps in with a formal plan to bridge the English-Spanish divide in Mattawa.
  6. Media Matters - Ignoring his reversal, media mention McCain’s immigration bill in context of his attempt to gain Hispanic support
  7. Benicio Del Toro, ‘Latino Brad Pitt’, wins Cannes award as ‘Che’
  8. Mexican star of immigrant drama gets border grief at Cannes - “Los Bastardos” star Ruben Sosa
  9. As Border Efforts Grow, Corruption Is on the Rise - Border Agents, Lured by the Other Side
  10. In Miami, Spanish is becoming the primary language
