In Texas, the Border Patrol will be checking the immigration status of evacuees during Hurricanes. Meaning if you aren’t in the country legally you don’t get evacuated unless you want to run the risk of getting deported. Nothing like looking out for your fellow human beings during a crisis. Link from the NY Times and "Border Patrol to Check for Illegal Immigrants During Hurricane Evacuations" from yesterday

Following yesterday’s report out of Houston on the finding that the "Loss of illegal immigrants would cripple economy" a commentary today brings up a good point. How can we trust any study’s findings when everyone is basically guessing how many illegal immigrants are in the country? Link

In Mexico, the military had to move into the town of Villa Ahumada, Chihuahua after the police commander and 2 officers were killed and the rest resigned or fled. Link

85 people were sentenced yesterday on federal felony charges after last week’s raid in Postville, Iowa. Link

Esquire magazine has an article entitled: "For every race in America, there’s another racial barrier. Ernesto Quiñonez examines the often contentious divide between Latinos and African-Americans." The title says it all. Link

Following yesterday’s speech by John McCain concerning Cuba comes an article from a Florida paper entitled: "Cuban policy becomes key in courtship of Latinos." I wonder if this really does concern most Latinos or only Cubans - we aren’t a monolithic ethnic group are we? From Reuters comes an article about how Puerto Rico is relishing the new-found clout that the island has in the race for the democratic nomination. Its 55 delegates may tip the balance. Still, I find it ironic that they can’t vote in the general election. Link plus Richardson is in Puerto Rico for Obama

The University of Southern California has created a new center called the Center for the Study of Immigrant Integration. The announcment came at the “Immigrant Integration and the American Future: Lessons From and for California" conference. Link

As much news as I cover, I hadn’t realized that Peru’s President Alejandro Toledo had been a child laborer. Interesting interview with him from Foreign Policy. Link

And finally, RBD’s Dulce María will make her big screen debut in the movie Una Vez Más from the producer of La Mujer de Mi Hermano Link
