“Barahona was one of 300 Hispanic students from the Austin school district who were honored Sunday at the annual Celebration of Hispanic Exemplary Academic Achievement.

Amid fanfare, the students and their families gathered at the Delco Center in Northeast Austin to receive awards for their success in academics and as campus leaders. The ceremony honored students with the best grades as well as those who have made strides in learning English.

“Over 50 percent of the kids in AISD are Hispanic,” said Martha Garcia, the district’s executive director of education and English as a second language. “We’re so happy to be here and honor these kids and their families. is a very important value for us as a culture.”"*
