Up in Washington Heights, home to a large stretch of Broadway, word of the 13 Tony nominations for neighborhood homage “In the Heights” left the locals beaming - if not dancing in the streets.
“I’m proud,” said Raul Rodriguez, 21, wearing his Yankees gear uptown, where the brightest lights typically twinkle from the George Washington Bridge. “It’s my neighborhood.”
Ercilia Garcia, 49, a program director at the social service agency Alianza Dominica, was surprised but thrilled to hear about the sweep of nominations - including Best Musical and Best Original Score.”*
