I get many e-mails and read many comments from anti-immigrant folk who want to deport all illegal immigrants. That is fine. Everyone is entitled to their opinion but I want to know who would foot the bill.
Last September in testimony before a Senate committee, ICE stated that "It would cost at least $94 billion to find, detain and remove all 12 million people believed to be staying illegally in the United States."
While that is a rough calculation, it can’t be denied that it is a large number. It does not take into consideration the economic (or social) ripple effect of removing that many people who may/or may not work, contribute to social security, pay taxes, shop, have kids in school, etc. Nor does it take into consideration how much money communities, health services etc might save. This is just a big number with huge implications.
So who is going to pay? Isn’t our country in enough debt and fiscal trouble that we can’t rub our brains together to come up with a smarter solution.
