Henry Cisneros also crashed and burned, as Burka says. So did Dan Morales. I can’t help but wonder what Texas would be like today if all these people had not gone down. (There are more Democrats to cite because the state’s has only recently turned Republican.) For example, would we have already had our first Latino governor or senator? if so, could Democrats have held on to power longer once the Bush machine started rolling in Texas?
We’ll never know the answers. But you can’t help but think about the questions when you read about the passing of someone like Guerrero.
There’s also a cautionary note in here for the future stars of Texas, whether that’s a talented Democrat like State Rep. Rafael Anchia of Dallas or a sharp Republican one like State Rep. Dan Branch of Dallas. It’s absolutely normal for them — or anyone else — to think about a higher office, but the political landscape is filled with people who tripped before they got out of the starting gate.”*
