“With a workplace smoke ban bandied about in the state Legislature this past session, the issue of smoking has been in the public arena and seemed like a pertinent topic for this fifth-annual event.

“Smoking is a really hot topic right now,” said Jen Thompson, health promotions coordinator with the American Cancer Society that put together the event with the parish. “This is one way to get at a large growing population that doesn’t otherwise get this information.”

Falling at the tail end of National Minority Cancer Awareness week, the event was tailored to the community. Conducted entirely cin Spanish with the help of presenter Fernando Bacelis, a parish member with a medical background, the focus was on the family and the effect of smoking on young people and those exposed to secondhand smoking.”*
