“Amanda Aguirre’s tale is an American success story. She was born and raised in Sonora, Mexico, migrated to the United States in her 20s, and settled in Arizona in 1987.

Her story is unique because she also is a member of the Arizona Legislature, where the most pressing issue is illegal immigration, which greatly affects the Latino community.

Interestingly, Aguirre’s great-grandfather on her mother’s side was an American soldier who came to the border to fight during the Mexican-American war, and fell in love and married her great-grandmother. Aguirre says that’s where she got her green eyes.”*
