“Another baseball season has begun, but not since 1995 has the game opened under such gloom. In 1994, Major League Baseball canceled the World Series due to a strike that pitted the owners’ attempt to impose a salary cap against a retaliatory attempt by the players union to rescind MLB’s antitrust exemption. Many fed-up baseball fans defected from the game.

The 1995 season featured three major events that helped fans to reconnect. They were the Japanese whirlwind rookie Hideo Nomo, Cal Ripken’s pursuit of Lou Gehrig’s consecutive-games-played streak and also the passing of one of baseball’s all-time greats, Mickey Mantle. This year, baseball opens under a cloud of controversy due to rampant allegations of steroid use by many notable players, not the least of whom are two of the all-time greats, Barry Bonds and Roger Clemens. Again many fans are again sick of the off-the-field politics.”*
