A record 26 people waded, dived or danced into Poppies Pond on Sunday as the final round of the Kraft Nabisco Championship gave way to a fiesta. The greenside party, replete with a five-piece mariachi band and a grandstand full of singers serenading the winner in Spanish, was the first of its kind, but then Lorena Ochoa’s victory at Mission Hills Country Club was a watershed moment.
It was her first major championship on North American soil, her second consecutive major title and her third victory in four starts this year. Ochoa carded a five-under-par 67 in the final round to finish at 11-under 277, five shots better than Suzann Pettersen of Norway and Sweden’s Annika Sorenstam, both of whom closed with 68s. Sorenstam, a three-time winner here, made a remarkable recovery from a stomach virus that nearly caused her to withdraw during the third round and required a trip to the hospital Saturday night for intravenous fluids.”*
