Latinos should seek office on merit, not ethnicity
”We may have an African American president or a white female president of the United States,” Sis Obed Torres Cordero told The Morning Call the other day, ”before the school board has a Latino or African American.” With this remark, Torres Cordero expressed his expectation of an appointment to the Bethlehem Area School Board in part based on his Latino ethnicity.
Torres Cordero’s success is revealed in his faithful tenure as an executive director of the Council of Spanish Speaking Organizations of the Lehigh Valley. Through his leadership, the Spanish Council has provided services in English and Spanish, employment counseling, a senior center, health care, and much more. A few weeks ago at a school board meeting, Lissette Lahoz, Latino Leadership Alliance of the Lehigh Valley president, described Torres Cordero with three words — integrity, commitment and trustworthy.”*
