“When Andres Salas has trouble with a class project, the San Joaquin Delta College student calls his teachers at their homes or on their cell phones.

“You couldn’t do that normally, unless you were in a college that was home-friendly,” the 19-year old said.

That friendly touch is the result of Puente, a Delta College program that strives to help students transfer to four-year universities, earn their degrees, and return to their communities as leaders and mentors. Salas said the program’s teacher and counselor push him to be a better student.”*
