“Multicultural Education and Counseling through the Arts (MECA) presents a fictional story of a young girl and her and their connection in the fight for social justice during the United Farm Workers Union strike.

The play is an original composition created for MECA in 2003 by Anthony J. Garcia of El Centro Su Teatro and made possible in part by a grant from the National Performance Networks’ Community Fund.

Papi, Me, and serves as a positive portrayal of the Hispanic cultural contribution, and it is a catalyst for intergenerational cultural discussion.

The play was written by Anthony J. Garcia, Executive Artistic Director at El Centro Su Teatro in Denver, which is a multi-disciplinary cultural arts center and one of the oldest theaters in the country. It will be directed by Robert Singleton, educator, consultant, and former Department Chair at the High School for the Performing and Visual Arts in Houston.

The play celebrates Chavez’s championing for the rights of the United Farm Workers Union during the 1960s. It articulates some of the issues that started the movement and how a grassroots organization successfully challenged corporate power in one of the most important democratic actions to date.

The play is geared toward school-aged and their families. The cast includes four performers who will sing in Spanish and act in English.

Papi, Me, and will have its opening performance at MECA’s Dow School (1900 Kane St., Houston, TX 77007) on March 28th at 8pm, before a tour of Houston-area schools and community centers that runs through May 5th.

This play is appropriate for grades 4-12 and complies with the TEKS curriculum. For booking inquiries contact Liz Salinas at 713-802-9370.
