Oscar-winning actor Benicio del Toro knows a thing or two about transcending language by dealing in universal human emotions. He used that approach to infuse his portrayal of a soft-spoken Mexican cop in Steven Soderbergh’s “Traffic,” and he’s hoping it will translate in his new role as executive producer of the new comedy “Maldeamores” (”Lovesickness”), shot and produced entirely in his native Puerto Rico and opening in theaters tomorrow.
“A laugh is a laugh; it doesn’t have flags, or a color of skin, or gender,” said Del Toro during a press junket on the island. “You don’t have to be Puerto Rican to laugh watching this movie. You might understand it better, but you’ll laugh even if you don’t have a sense of humor.”"*
