“Despite improvements, federal officials said Tuesday that the backlog for citizenship applications is still 14 to 16 months.

As a result, thousands of legal residents who applied for citizenship last year will be unable to vote in the November election.

Emilio Gonzalez, who heads the Citizenship and Immigration Services, told a House panel that he can guarantee only that people who applied by June would get processed this fiscal year, which ends Sept 30.”*
