Mexicans make up the largest portion of Polk County’s Hispanic population, said Miguel Rivera, Hispanic Council chairman with the Haines City Chamber of Commerce. So it’s no surprise that business owners of other ethnicities would try to tap into that market. The groups often share the same language, values and religious beliefs.
Rivera doesn’t keep track of the number of Mexican-goods stores owned by non-Mexicans, but he named several off the top of his head — including two others in Haines City.
“The demand is there,” Rivera said. “They’re just trying to capitalize.”"*
