Chef, nutritionist and cookbook author, Laura Diaz-Brown, known as Chef LaLa, is encouraging people with type 2 diabetes to recognize that small changes, including food choices, can have a big effect on managing diabetes. Through the Journey for Control campaign, supported by Merck & Co., Inc., Chef LaLa will be visiting selected people to help make over their favorite Latino recipes into diabetes-friendly dishes. The Healthy Menu Makeover Program with Chef LaLa, which launches nationally today, is conducted in collaboration with the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists (AACE). To learn more about the campaign or to be considered for a Healthy Menu Makeover, visit JourneyForControl.com.
Diabetes is a rapidly growing health problem in the country. Nearly 21 million people in the United States (7 percent of the population) have diabetes, and the incidence of diabetes is high among Hispanic American adults as almost one in 10 of whom suffer from this disease. Type 2 diabetes is a condition diagnosed by elevated blood sugar or glucose, and it accounts for about 90 to 95 percent of all diagnosed cases. With type 2 diabetes, the body may not make enough insulin, the insulin that the body produces may not work as well as it should, and/or the liver may release too much glucose.
“Diabetes is a subject that is very close to my heart. Having seen three of my grandparents and my father struggle with type 2 diabetes, I am personally dedicated to sharing my recipes and cooking tips with U.S. Hispanics,” said Chef LaLa. “As a chef and a nutritionist, I have dedicated a big part of my life to showing people that it is possible to enjoy healthy Latino food without sacrificing traditional family flavor. That’s what this campaign is all about: small changes having a big effect.”
The Journey for Control campaign with Chef LaLa launches nationally and will visit cities throughout the United States in the coming months. To be considered for a Healthy Menu Makeover and a visit from Chef LaLa, people with type 2 diabetes and those who care for people who have type 2 diabetes should log on to JourneyForControl.com and complete the online questionnaire. Questionnaires will be accepted until 11:59 p.m. ET on April 11, 2008. Participants will be selected based on several factors, including their goals for managing type 2 diabetes.
To develop her diabetes-friendly recipes, Chef LaLa works closely with Myriam Z. Allende-Vigo, M.D., MBA, FACP, FACE, director of the Endocrine Section of the Department of Medicine at the University of Puerto Rico Medical Sciences Campus, a member of the AACE Board of Directors and chair of the AACE International Membership Committee.
“AACE recognizes the challenges people with diabetes face every day and supports this program because small changes can have a positive effect on managing diabetes more successfully,” said Dr. Allende-Vigo. “It is important for people with type 2 diabetes to talk to their endocrinologists or primary care doctors and to their healthcare teams about developing personalized diet, exercise and treatment plans that may help to lead to better blood sugar control.”
A healthy diet is a key component of diabetes management. The Journey for Control campaign encourages people with type 2 diabetes to recognize that small changes can have a big effect on managing diabetes, including:
– Eating more fresh vegetables, using sugar substitutes, and drinking water instead of soda
– Limiting the amount of sodium in your meals by using flavor enhancers like lemon, chilies, vinegars, herbs and spices instead of salt
– Grilling, broiling, baking, braising, boiling or steaming your food instead of frying
– Increasing physical activity, even in small amounts, like walking instead of driving and taking the stairs instead of the elevator, when possible
– Talking to your endocrinologist or primary care provider about treatment options
– Speaking with a nutritionist or a diabetes educator for advice on creating diabetes-friendly meals
– Visiting JourneyForControl.com for flavorful recipes, nutritional advice and exercise tips
“Living with diabetes can be a challenge, but I want people to know that it is within their control to have a great quality of life and enjoy eating,” said Chef LaLa.
