Lucy Acosta, the trailblazing civic activist who for over 25 years guided a nonprofit agency tasked with providing services to many of El Paso’s elderly and disabled adults, died Saturday evening. She was 80.
Acosta had diabetes and was recovering from recent surgery at an area hospital when she died, friends and colleagues said.
A 1943 graduate of Bowie High School, Acosta was known by friends as “Mama Bear” and participated in many causes of the League of United Latin American Citizens, serving as executive director for the organization’s Project Amistad.”*
