The West Michigan Whitecaps, the Class A affiliate of the Tigers, hope to appeal to the Latin-American community’s passion for the sport.
Two years ago, West Michigan had eight Latin-American players on its roster during the season. Last season, the number grew to 12 including outfielder Gorkys Hernandez the Midwest League MVP last season.
“We’ve noticed the increase of Latin-American players on our rosters, and we’re doing what we can to help them during their stay here,” said Whitecaps CEO Lew Chamberlin. “Doing what we can is important to us. There’s a growing Latin-American population in our country, and we want to reach out to them and everyone else.”"*
