“The Garcias represent a growing number of Hispanic-based business owners who have opened shop here in Rutherford County.

According to city records, at least a dozen Hispanic busineses — from restaurants to painting services — have received business licenses in the last three months.

As the population of Hispanics increases in the area, the number of Hispanic-oriented businesses tends to increase as well. Hispanics made up 2.8 percent of the total county population, according to the 2000 U.S. Census. But, that percentage has nearly doubled since then. According to a 2006 estimate from the U.S. Census, Hispanics now make up at least 5.3 percent of the county’s population.”*
