A brightly-colored mural depicting aspects of Central American culture created controversy at the Homestead City Council meeting Monday.
Part of a national ad campaign by Western Union known as ”Proyecto Raices,” or Project Roots, to raise awareness about and unify Hispanic cultures, the 54-foot by 10-foot mural is proposed for the southern left corner of Borges Supermarket, at 625 Washington Ave. Though the mural would be on private property, all murals must be approved by the city council.
Unlike traditional murals, this one would not be painted on the building, but would instead be installed over a period of two days. Similar murals have been erected in Dallas and Los Angeles.”*
