Thousands of teachers, their families and supporters marched before the island’s Department of Education’s headquarters Tuesday as the public-school-teachers strike neared its first week.
The teachers walked off their jobs Feb. 21 after 30 months of contract negotiations collapsed. Government officials say the strike is illegal under Puerto Rican law, which forbids the disruption of the public-education system.
The island’s Department of Labor on Tuesday petitioned a court to order the teachers back to the classrooms. If the request is granted, police could arrest those who defy the order. The union leader cautioned against such a move.”*
