Voters sent a law-and-order message Tuesday, electing Tony Ortiz to the Orlando City Council and making him the second former police officer on the board.
Ortiz, who ended a 14-year career with the Orlando Police Department to run for office, drew 50.7 percent of the vote in a tight runoff election against opponent Belinda Ortiz, who carried 49.3 percent.
When he takes office May 1, Tony Ortiz will be only the second Hispanic to serve on the City Council. But he said the Hispanic community in the heavily Latino district looked at qualifications first.”*
