Gender and minority status went head-to-head in the Latino(a) community on Feb. 5 — and gender won.
The win of Hillary Clinton among Latinos in California, New York, New Jersey, and other super Tuesday contests with the largest Latino populations is no surprise. Throughout the campaign she has had a sizable lead and this materialized into a clear and ringing endorsement on Super Tuesday.
What does come as a surprise is the gender differential among Latinos(as) that emerged. In every primary race, Latinas provided lower levels of support than their male counterparts. This even occurred in Barack Obama’s home state of Illinois, where there was an 18-point difference in the exit poll returns.”*
