Vargas: Naysayers should look to California, Nevada

The importance of the Latino vote in Texas is by now a full-throated national story given the importance of the March 4 Democratic primary. Hispanics comprise about 20 percent of eligible voters in the state and are considered by many to be pivotal to the fortunes of Sens. Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton.
But some Texas consultants and analysts whisper that the value of the Latino vote is overstated because they historically vote in numbers below their share of the voting-age population.
“I would say tell that to Sen. Clinton. Had it not been for the Hispanic vote, she would not have carried California or Nevada,” said Arturo Vargas, executive director of the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials Educational Fund. The organization seeks to increase Latino civic and voter participation.”*
