RENOWNED PERFORMANCE ARTIST GUILLERMO GOMEZ-PENA TO VISIT COLORADO STATE

The Student Organization for the Visual Arts announced Mexican performance artist Guillermo Gmez-Pea will be visiting Colorado State on Feb. 27-28.

Gmez-Pea has won numerous awards for his art and has been a contributor to National Public Radio’s “All Things Considered.” He will appear at the Lory Student Center Theater at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 27, and Thursday, Feb. 28. The events are free and open to the public.

During the Wednesday show, Gómez-Peña will offer a solo performance called “The Mexorcist.” It explores aspects of immigration, globalization, technology, censorship and interracial relations. Thursday’s audio-visual performance, “Ethno Techno: In Search of a New Aesthetic,” will touch on other projects. Themes include the “mainstream bizarre” and multiculturalism as it relates to the Chicano/Latino community as well as notions of the body in performance.

Gómez-Peña’s collaborative performance art often involves elaborate costumes that engage the audience to become part of the performance itself. In 1993, he formalized the artist collective and non-profit organization, La Pocha Nostra, based in San Francisco where he currently lives. The group’s artwork concerns the interface between Mexican and U.S. culture.

Besides his performance art, he has published eight books in both English and Spanish. Among his awards, he was the first Mexican-born artist to receive a MacArthur Foundation Fellowship Award in 1991. He has been consistently producing work around the world since 1988.
