While a small Mayan community in Alamosa, Colo., is often mistaken for Mexican, its leaders are working hard to distinguish themselves and keep their traditions and culture alive.
Unlike other immigrants, they received political aslyum, their homeland racked by war and atrocity, says a recent report in the Denver Post. Now about 400 Mayans, Q’anjob’al Indians from Guatemala live in the area, and the story describes its Fiesta of Santa Eulalia, in which they bridge the new and old.”*
