Knowledge is Power!
Cuban-born University of Pennsylvania professor Roman de la Campa has a theory about why aged, ailing Fidel Castro is stepping down. In fact, he has three.
“You could say that he wants to step down for his own role in history,” so he doesn’t die clinging to power like the stereotyped dictator, said del la Campa, 58, chairman of Penn’s romance language department and author of Cuba on My Mind: Journeys to a Severed Nation, which recounts, among other stories, his immigration to America following Cuba’s 1959 revolution.
Another motive might be Castro’s desire “to channel the transition,” officially through his brother Raul, at a time when Cubans are more hungry than ever for hard currency, and restless for a post-revolutionary narrative. In essence, it may pave the way for what comes after Raul as well.”*
