“Cuban president Fidel Castro has announced he is stepping down as head of state and commander in chief of the country’s armed forces.

He retires as head of state 49 years after he seized power in an armed revolution. His resignation will bring to an end to one of the world’s longest reigns in power outlasting nine US presidents.

Castro, 81, said in a statement that he would not seek a new presidential term when the National Assembly meets on February 24.”*
