Clovis poet and novelist Margarita Engle found a kindred soul in Juan Francisco Manzano.
The one-time agronomy professor, daughter of a Cuban mother, found Manzano a fascinating figure from Cuban history. Manzano was a Cuban poet born into slavery in 1797 whose talent drew the attention of his fellow countrymen and people across the Atlantic Ocean.
And now, Engle’s book of free-verse poetry about him — “The Poet Slave of Cuba: A Biography of Juan Francisco Manzano” — has won her attention: She’s been given the 2008 Pura Belpre Award.”*
