“Founded in 1929 in Corpus Christi, LULAC has fought for almost 80 years to help elevate Hispanics in El Paso, Texas and across the United States as the oldest and largest Hispanic civil-rights organization with an estimated 115,000 members. Six national LULAC presidents have come from El Paso’s District 4, which is celebrating LULAC’s 79th anniversary and preparing to observe LULAC’s 80 years of advocacy next year.

While LULAC leaders point to many success stories, some Hispanics question whether it is losing its influence as Hispanics struggle for more political and economic clout as the nation’s largest and fastest-growing minority. LULAC leaders insist that it continues to advocate equal opportunity for Hispanics in government, law, education and business. Over the years, LULAC has tried to work through the system to achieve its goals, compared with the more radical tactics of other Mexican-American organizations.
