“Fifteen-year-old Hispanic girls have celebrated their faith and their transition into womanhood with elaborate Quinceañeras since 500 BC, when girls were given the instruction and responsibilities of womanhood. Over the centuries, the has become both an enormously significant rite of passage and a tremendous honor, one that Hispanic girls today anticipate with pride and happiness. And now, Hispanic boys are embracing the male version as a celebration of faith and manhood.

Though nowhere near as common as the , the Quinceañero is gaining in popularity and celebrated with equal gusto! While some boys still see it as strictly a girl’s domain, many boys see their Quinceañero as a testament to their faith, their entry into adulthood and an opportunity to share in a joyful Hispanic tradition. Your son may approach you with the idea, which certainly indicates he’s interested, or you may ask him not long after his 14th birthday if he’d like to celebrate his 15th birthday with a Quinceañero. If he declines, you should respect his choice.

When your son has decided on a Quince, you should start planning at least six months before the event. More and more are lavishing their sons with parties, limousines, speeches – everything except the dress—so planning takes some time. Needless to say, some customs need revision to be male-oriented.”*
