A bill aimed at preventing illegal immigrants from getting state benefits was approved Tuesday by a Senate committee along a party-line vote.
The measure sponsored by Senate President Pro Tempore Joe Scarnati, R-Jefferson, tackles the immigration issue by requiring individuals applying for benefits such as Medicaid, unemployment benefits, and college tuition assistance to provide identification of U.S. citizenship and sign an affidavit stating they are in the country legally.
“I think this is something most Pennsylvanians greatly desire,” said Scarnati after the bill was approved 6-4 by the State Government Committee. “It makes sure all people receiving public benefits are U.S. citizens.” “*
