Latino parents decry state’s decision to scrap IMAGE exam – Chicago

Tagged: , , , , ,

“A group of Latino parents from Logan Square begged state education officials Tuesday not to make their children take the regular state math and reading exams, saying widespread failure and shattered self-esteem would result.

“Our children will lose faith in themselves and their abilities if you make them take this test,” said Maria Elena Guzman, who has five children in Chicago Public Schools. “This is not fair to the children.”

Guzman and about 50 parents and children staged a news conference to protest the state’s recent decision to scrap the Illinois Measure of Annual Growth in English, or IMAGE, an annual exam given to students with limited English language skills.”*
