eBeisbol.com, the official website of the Serie del Caribe and ALIANZA LATINA DE BÉISBOL, announced that fans selected pitcher Nelson Figueroa as the Most Valuable Player of the Serie del Caribe 2008. The Serie del Caribe, which concluded on February 7th in Santiago, Dominican Republic, determines the champion country of professional Caribbean Winter League baseball.
Nelson responded to eBeisbol.com, “I would truly like to thank everyone that voted for me. It is an honor to be named the fan’s MVP of such a tremendous event like the Serie del Caribe. . . ”
The culmination of a stellar winter season performance by Figueroa was recognized by fans as truly something special. In fan voting, Figueroa outdistanced MLB greats Miguel Tejada, Tony Pena Jr. and Nelson Cruz. Nelson earned the fans votes by dominating, on two occasions, the eventual Serie del Caribe champions, the Licey Tigres of the Dominican Republic. Celines Toribio, host of eBeisbol.com‘s community, Conexión de Béisbol (www.ebeisbol.com/cdb_sdc2008.html), recruited fans to participate in voting for their MVP choice. She remarked, “our fans are very enthusiastic and extremely knowledgeable about the game.”
Figueroa, a Brooklyn, NY native with Puerto Rican heritage, has left his indelible mark in the annals of Caribbean baseball. On the heels of a “dream season,” including MVP awards in China and the Dominican Republic, Figueroa performed brilliantly for the Yaquis of Obregón, the Mexican representative, in the Serie del Caribe, well preparing him for MLB’s spring training with the New York Mets. Nelson told eBeisbol.com, “being game ready and not just in throwing shape because of my participation in the Serie del Caribe I believe will give me an edge this spring in my quest to make the team with the Major League roster of the Mets.”
Figueroa’s “dream season” has been one spectacular string of performances for teams on two continents (for the full story go to www.ebesibol.com) and is topped off by an invitation to major league spring training by the New York Mets. Mets general manager, Omar Minaya told the press at the Serie del Caribe, “Figueroa will have a genuine opportunity to win a spot on our team during spring training.”
