LATV, the nation’s first bilingual music/entertainment network distributed via digital multicast, announced today that it had signed on San Francisco-Oakland-San Jose station KTVU as its 27th national affiliate. The Cox-owned Fox station is in the sixth largest DMA (Designated Television Market Area) in the country and the ninth largest Hispanic television market.
“With the launch of Bay Area’s KTVU, we will be in six of the top 10 U.S. Hispanic markets. Not only is it a large Hispanic market, it’s the sixth largest DMA, letting us bring our programming to bicultural viewers throughout the San Francisco-Oakland-San Jose area,” said Howard Bolter, president and COO, LATV. “With 2009 fast approaching and broadcasters meeting the FCC’s digital deadline, LATV’s distribution model is right on track. It’s a win-win for viewers, stations and the network.”
In addition to KTVU, Cox Broadcasting also operates independent station KICU giving it a duopoly in the San Francisco-Oakland-San Jose area market. Through a KTVU-brokered deal, LATV will be seen on Comcast Cable Bay Area, channel 188. The network will reach approximately 840,000 total households of which 60,000 are Hispanic. Adds Mr. Bolter, “KTVU is the top station in the market and a great outlet for us. We are thrilled to have them join the network.”
“After carefully assessing all of our options, we are very excited to partner with LATV. We have been impressed with the energetic, creative, quality programming that they’ve been putting on the air for the last few years. We believe that it will be an excellent fit for the young Latino market in the Bay Area,” said Tim McVay, KTVU vice president and general manager.
LATV has 27 affiliation agreements across the country in 16 of the top 25 Hispanic television markets. The bilingual network has previously announced an affiliation partnership with LATV minority investor Post-Newsweek, an extensive affiliation agreement with Entravision and numerous other deals. LATV is also carried on basic cable through its affiliates and in Los Angeles on KJLA via cable, broadcast and DBS.

You won’t get far into an immigration-reform debate, for instance, before the GOP’s more zealous legislators start doing things like criminalizing priests and calling Miami a “third world country.” Which is why Democrats ought to be more eager to spend 2010 debating immigration.
